When Vonnie Williams was seven, her mother taught her how to embroider. She was instantly hooked and practiced her stitches on stamped doily and pillow case designs purchased at the local Woolworth's. Soon, french knots, buttonhole, daisy, chain and feather became her new language.
She quickly graduated to making her own designs using felt and embroidery floss. Coupling her skills with mastering the sewing machine, she became unstoppable. As her designs evolved, wool and yarn replaced felt and floss. The thick, tightly woven fibers and sponge-like quality of the wool made for clean and detailed cuts, perfect for applique.
Vonnie appliques each of her pieces by hand and uses orphaned wool from old garments and blankets to create her one of a kind pieces. She continually aspires to find new expressions to showcase her work and still uses her old white rotary machine.
