The story of the jelly sandal begins in 1946, in the aftermath of the Second World War. Leather had become scarce and manufacturers were searching for new materials for footwear. Enter the jelly sandal. Made using injection molded PVC and manufactured from a single block, it was a revolution in footwear.
The soft plastic beach sandal quickly became the starlet of the French coast. By the 1960's, the casual, playful style had become part of mainstream fashion, embraced by style icons such as Brigitte Bardot and Twiggy and was produced in a myriad of colors.
In 2000, the original company, La Saraizienne, was acquired by Meduse, who continue to produce the original style, Sun, using the original manufacturing process and design.
Understanding the important need for sustainability, Meduse began to explore new options for materials. Working with recycled plastic and hemp, they created a new line, Plasticana. Honoring the original Sun style, they created Sunchavre, a phthalate-free and completely recyclable jelly sandal.
